Old Business

The future of catalogers

There was a concern voiced about the number of library schools not only not requiring cataloging, but not even offering it. The discussion continued about requesting the non?accreditation of library schools that do not offer cataloging. Also, the finding of Joseph Miller's letter and forwarding it to Mike Tribby.

New Business

Program suggestions for 2003

2003 or 2004 program. Possible topic: Where are the future catalogers coming from? Promote catalogers and cataloging, not just teaching.

Wei Jeng-Chu of Indian Trails (IL) PL will organize the program for 2003, helped by Bob Hall (Concord Free PL, Concord Mass.) and Lois Upham (Uncle Remus Regional Library, GA).

Other topics suggested:

  • new edition of Dewey coming out in 2003. How people coped with the change.
  • e-books - what are libraries doing with them; what problems, success, etc.

Other

Bob Hall volunteered to put up a web page for the committee, by putting a link to it from PLA website. Some things to be included: meeting minutes, announcements of meetings, list of committee, committee mission, links, PowerPoint links. Contact Bob via e-mail address at bobhall@mln.lib.ma.us.
