PLA CONFERENCE AUDIOTAPES, WEBCASTS, HANDOUTS AVAILABLE

Visit www.pla.org and follow links to order audiotapes of your favorite conference programs, or to download handouts from programs. In addition two conference program were videotaped and are being webcast at www.pla.org/conference/conf02/webcast.html. The webcast programs include: Preparing for Disaster, which is 33 Minutes long, and Public Libraries' Response to September 11, 2001- Q & A Session, which runs for 48 Minutes.

NEW PLA PRODUCTS AID RECRUITMENT EFFORTS - GET YOURS TODAY!

The Public Library Association has developed a number of products to aid in the ongoing effort to recruit public librarians into the profession. The association has developed a comprehensive recruitment website (http://www.pla.org/projects/recruit.html) that contains testimonials from real-life librarians on why they chose public librarianship; educational requirements; scholarship information and links; salary data and other resources; and an informative look at the public library world entitled "public library fast facts."

In addition to the website, colorful "Ask me why I love my job" buttons are available for .25 each and brochures entitled "Public Librarianship: Imagine the Possibilities" are available for free. PLA also will present a program at the upcoming ALA Annual Conference that will address the shortage of public librarians and detail current recruitment efforts. "Where Have All the Librarians Gone - Strategies for Recruiting and Retaining Them" will be held on Sunday, June 16, 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

ADVANCE REGISTRATION ENDS FOR PLANNING FOR RESULTS WORKSHOP

PLA will hold a workshop entitled "Planning For Results: Transform Your Library for the 21st Century," on April 23, 2002, at the Public Library of Nashville and Davidson County, in Nashville, Tennessee. Registration officially ended Mar. 30. A limited number of registrations will be accepted onsite, with cost starting at $190 for PLA members. This one-day workshop will introduce public library staff members to "The New Planning for Results: A Streamlined Approach." The "New Planning For Results" is the fourth in a series of PLA books dedicated to helping public librarians develop strategic plans for their libraries. Workshop leader Sandra Nelson is a consultant specializing in public library planning and management issues. She is co-author of "Wired for the Future: Developing Your Library Technology Plan" (ALA, 1999) and "Managing For Results: Effective Resource Allocation for Public Libraries (ALA, 2000) and recently completed "The New Planning For Results: A Streamlined Approach" (ALA, 2001). PLA President's Program -
PLA President Toni Garvey is pleased to invite you to attend the PLA President's Program featuring Frank DeFord. Among the most versatile of writers, DeFord's work has appeared in virtually every medium. He writes for Sports Illustrated; on radio he may be heard on NPR; he is a regular correspondent on HBO's RealSports. DeFord is the author of thirteen books. The latest of his seven novels, The Other Adonis, is a psychological thriller. Elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters, DeFord has also won both an Emmy and a George Foster Peabody award for broadcasting.
