Members of PLA committees are invited to join PLA President-elect JoAnn
Pinder and the PLA Board of Directors to meet, mingle and learn about
our association. The keynote speaker, an authority on association management,
will consider association leadership and discuss the differences between
a member-driven organization and a member-focused organization. Refreshments
and musical entertainment will be provided.

PLA President Toni Garvey is pleased to invite you to attend the PLA
President's Program featuring Frank DeFord. Among the most versatile of
writers, DeFord's work has appeared in virtually every medium. He writes
for Sports Illustrated; on radio he may be heard on NPR; he is a regular
correspondent on HBO's RealSports. DeFord is the author of thirteen books.
The latest of his seven novels, The Other Adonis, is a psychological
thriller. Elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters
and Sportswriters, DeFord has also won both an Emmy and a George Foster
Peabody award for broadcasting.

PLA Membership Booth - Volunteers Needed!
PLA is participating in the joint division membership booth at the upcoming
ALA Annual Conference. The membership booth is usually located in the
registration area of the convention center. We're looking for PLA members
to spread the word about PLA to booth visitors. Staffing the membership
booth is usually done in one-hour time slots (although many people choose
two-hour time slots!). The booth is open Saturday, June 15, from 9-5;
Sunday, June 16, from 9-5; Monday, June 17, from 9-5; and Tuesday, June
18, from 9-4.
We need volunteers for the following slots:
Saturday: 9-10 a.m.; 12 - 1 p.m.; 1-2 p.m.; 2-3 p.m. Sunday: 9-10 a.m.;
12-1 p.m.; 1-2 p.m.; 2-3 p.m.; 4-5 p.m. Monday: 9-10 a.m.; 12-1 p.m.;
3-4 p.m.; 4-5 p.m. Tuesday: 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.; 12-1 p.m.; 1-2 p.m.;2-3
p.m.; 3-4 p.m.
If you are interested in volunteering to staff the PLA membership booth,

Interactive Map of Atlanta
Check out the interactive exhibit floor map and Atlanta City Map at http://maps.urhere.com/atlanta/
sponsored by Adobe and H.W. Wilson. The URHere Interactive Map allows
you to find hotels, resturants, shopping and attractions in the Atlanta
area, all at a click of your mouse. Then click the link at the top of
the map to see an interactive map of the ALA Annual Conference exhibit
floor, showing the locations of all the ALA exhibitors. At the conference,
look for your free hardcopy of this map, which will include Atlanta info,
exhibits info and program info, all in one easy-to-carry pocket-sized
map. Also the interactive floorplan will be available on the Message Center
Product Locator Terminals located in the ALA Registration Area at the
Georgia World Congress Center.

PLDS 2002 Available at Annual Conference
Designed to aid and enhance the public library planning and evaluation
process, the "Public Library Data Service Statistical Report 2002" is
now available. The current edition will help library managers identify
top performing libraries, compare service levels and technology usage,
and provide documentation for funding requests. Also included are the
results of a special survey on public library facilities. The data contained
in this year's report was collected from more than 1000 public libraries.
Categories include financial information, library resources and output
measures, annual use figures, technology in public libraries and more.
Library identification is also provided.
The "Statistical Report 2002" (ISBN 0-8389-8182-8) will be available
at the ALA Store at the ALA Annual Conference or from the ALA Order Department
in July. The cost is $80 with discounts for ALA and PLA members. The ALA

PLA Draft Strategic Plan Available on PLA Website

PLA Managing For Results Workshop
Managing for Results Workshop PLA is offering a special one day workshop,
"Managing for Results: Effective Resource Allocation for Public Libraries,"
to be held October 8, 2002 at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, Colorado.
Sandra Nelson, author of the ALA publication "Managing for Results," will
present an overview of the issues library managers must consider as they
make their resource allocation decisions, concentrating on four specific
areas: staffing, facilities, collections, and technology. The workshop
will also provide library managers with the information they need to determine
the current capacity of their resources, how those resources are being
utilized, and how many of those resources will be required to accomplish
the results identified in the library's strategic plan. Registration is
limited and all registration forms must be received by September 13, 2002.
