Course Name

Library Building, Planning, and Maintenance

General Description

Two-and-a-half-day course to provide an overview of effective library building, planning, and maintenance techniques. Procedures on how to evaluate existing buildings and how to contract with appropriate building planning, design and maintenance professionals to project building needs. Recommendations on how to communicate with planners and consultants to develop short and long range capital plans.

Components

  1. Building maintenance evaluation
  2. Analysis of functional adequacy of buildings
  3. Basic understanding of architectural and engineering plans and construction documents
  4. How to select and what to expect from architects, engineers and other design professionals
  5. Elements of both short and long range improvement plans
  6. Elements and techniques in capital budgeting

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. List building maintenance and operation procedures for effective budgeting and selection of maintenance programs and staff
  2. Describe short and long range capital improvement and facility development plans
  3. List procedures in employing architectural, engineering and consultant assistance in building maintenance and development programs
  4. Describe key concepts and required information in developing building programs
  5. Describe the planning and construction processes for renovated or new facilities
  6. List life and safety issues in building operation and planning
  7. List technology planning needs and building requirements
  8. Describe post-occupancy evaluation procedures

Course Methods

Use of slides, building plans, construction documents, contract documents, RFP documents

Handouts and worksheets to be made available to students:

  • Building evaluation and rating forms
  • Sample building program outline
  • Sample RFP for architects
  • Sample data worksheet questionnaire

Possible Presenters

  • State library building consultants, e.g. Richard Hall (California)
  • Consultants with successful presentation experience as reflected by positive recommendations from past programs: Lee Brawner, Anders Dahlgren, Robert Rohlf

Course should include specialists in addition to general presenter.
